creating space in your life

If you’re not living your dream life yet, it can truly be difficult to change that. You may feel stuck in life you don’t love and you don’t see how you can get out. You may work long hours in a job you don’t like, and in the evenings and weekends you have the other stuff of life to deal with. Life is just a series of events that happen to you, and you are struggling to keep up. Maybe you feel powerless to change anything.

If you’d like to change your life around, it’s necessary to make some small but very significant changes to the way you spend your time. To create space for clarity, inspiration, and guidance to flow into your life. When you feel good, your energy, your vibes are high, and in this state you can attract more good things. Also, intention is one part of making change happen, but action inspired by nudges from your heart is the second really important part. It doesn’t matter how small the steps are, you don’t need to be able to see the whole road ahead to make the first small steps. But every journey starts with the first steps, without those, you’ll stay in the same place where you are now.

Below I share about what I did to create space in my life, when I was taking the first baby steps towards my heart-shaped life. Space and time for nurturing practices that helped me connect with my heart. Space and time to follow up on the guidance, ideas and insight I received, time for inspired action.  I know these changes have made a big difference in where I am now!

Reducing screen time 

When you come home after a long day at work it can feel really good to switch off in the evening by watching television or Netflix. It can be lovely to forget about everything and lose yourself in a completely different world.  But if you spend most of your daytime hours working a job you don’t like, and in the evening you switch off by watching television, there is not much time left for making change. When you go to bed each evening, and you have taken no steps to change your life, things will be the same the next morning.

If you are serious about creating your heart-shaped life, it is crucial to create time and space for nurturing practices, and cutting down on watching television is one key way to do so, because many of us spend a lot of time, sometimes many hours, in front of their TV or laptop screen.  I got rid of my television altogether more than 15 years ago, and I know it has been a very important factor in freeing myself and being where I am now with my life.

For me having no television is 100%  normal, but I do remember how my colleagues at work back then found this very strange, ad used to wonder what on earth I was doing then in the evenings?! Well, I was plotting my great escape to a life of freedom;) 

Of course it’s perfectly fine to switch off & relax every now and then with a lovely movie or series. But especially when you are currently in a job you don’t like, the evenings are prime time for you to start creating change.  So ask yourself if limiting TV time could be a way of creating time for nurturing practices and change.  

And if you choose to be very discerning about what you watch, you can make your switch off time inspiring and uplifting time too.

Less time on social media and online

Social media and the internet are wonderful to stay connected with friends, soul sisters, and inspiring people and to find useful info. But social media have been created in a way that they are quite addictive, so it’s easy to lose ourselves in endless scrolling and spend quite a bit of time on these platforms. We are living in the Information age, and a study has shown that we receive the equivalent of 174 newspapers a day of information, it is no wonder that we feel overwhelmed with info and paralyzed to get much done. Our brain needs to process all of this information, and a lot of it, especially on social media, is not actually helping us to create change in our lives.

I don’t spend a lot of time on Social Media or browsing online, although I find it sometimes hard not to. When I do find myself scrolling and scrolling, I notice that I feel paralyzed and uninspired. I could spend my time instead doing something constructive, something that makes me feel good inside and gives me a sense of satisfaction at the end of my evening or day.

Ask yourself how much time you spend on social media, and if you could free up some time by reducing your screen time, spending it instead on nurturing practices, things you love doing, maybe something creative,  something that lights you up and makes you feel good. You could give yourself a set amount of time on social media & online each day, and after time’s up, go do something that is empowering and energizing instead, something away from devices and their electric energy and information overload. It brings calm and balance and gives your mind a rest.

I find it hard sometimes to get up and do something creative, something positive in the evening. But I know that every time I do it, it is immensely satisfying. Following your bliss, doing little things that make you happy on a regular basis creates miracles!

Shifting your information flow to positive and uplifting

I stopped watching and following the news and reading newspapers about the same time I stopped watching television, so about 15 years ago, and I feel so much better because of it. Does that mean I don’t care about what’s going on in the world? No not at all. In fact I care a lot, so much that when I watch the news and see all the misery and suffering that is broadcasted to us all, I start to get depressed, I start to lose hope, and I become paralysed.

It is quite well known that the news almost only focuses on the negative. Drama and violence seems to get a response from our “older reptile brain” and we keep watching. This is what the news channels want, because they make their money selling advertisements. The more we watch the more money they can make. Some people even claim the negative stream of news is created on purpose, to keep us paralysed and to live in fear. 

To live in fear is to lose your power. Fear is a low vibe state and when you live in this state, higher vibe guidance, clarity and inspiration can’t really flow to you. I’ve found that surrounding myself with high vibe messages, inspiration and images uplifts me immensely, gives me hope and empowers me to make change.

I believe it is super important to be discerning about what kind of messages and images, what kind of energy you allow into your awareness on a regular basis. From a positive hopeful state of mind you can create real change in your life. If you focus on the good things in life, and more good things will come flowing your way.

More ideas for creating space & time in your day

Most of us have very busy schedules, from the moment we wake up till the moment we lay our heads on our pillows, we are busy getting things done. This can be especially so for families with (young) children and it can be challenging to find a bit of time for yourself to devote to nurturing practices.

Still, it’s possible to look very carefully at your days, for example to explore how you can tag a nurturing practice along to something else you are already doing. For example, if you travel to work every day, is it possible to leave half an hour earlier, and en route, to stop somewhere and be by yourself for a little while maybe even in a park or somewhere in nature? Can you take time for yourself during a lunch break? Would it be possible to get up a bit earlier in the morning to find quiet time?

The benefits you get from taking time for yourself every day can completely change how the rest of your day goes and flows, so even though at first you may struggle a bit to get up earlier, you’ll likely soon feel the very positive effects that bit of self-care and time for yourself has on you and on those around you, and you’ll be so glad you started.

You can start very small, and these small openings will create entry ways for more and more goodness to flow into your life.  As you start looking after yourself and connecting with your heart, –  ideas, insights, help, support, synchronicities will start appearing, making more and more possible. So take a moment to look at your daily & weekly schedule creatively, start very small,  and ask for guidance and ideas on how to create more and more space and time for your heart-shaped life.
